“I thought that I would be in Heaven but I am only up a tree.”
Ryan James Caruthers
James Caruthers's recently published book inspired our current show. Inspired by Caspar David Friedrich’s painting “The Monk by the Sea,” James Caruthers's search for self among the trees evokes an intimate connection akin to that of lovers, reflecting his desire to surrender to an unpredictable force.
This show, dedicated to Trees, is an inquiry into the concept of time—the camera recording its subject in a split-second and the forest having potentially infinite lifespans. Autumn has arrived, and temperate trees offer an elegant map for navigating the passage of time.
ARTIST: GREG St JOHN
Greg St John has been drawn to the landscape around him all of his life. The landscape can be trees, plants, architecture, and objects—a series of abstract marks, values, shapes, and colors. He is fascinated by their interrelationships, how they create movement and rhythms, and how one’s eye absorbs the energy. From the sculptures, drawings, and oil paintings on display at the gallery, we can feel the same unpredictable force that James Caruthers captured from his photographs.

Kenise Barnes Fine Art is pleased to announce an exhibition featuring contemporary landscape paintings and drawings. Immortalized in the 1800s by painters in the Hudson River School, the Hudson River Valley has been a rich source of inspiring forests, mountains, and vistas for artists. Point of view is the position from which something is observed; it is also the voice in which a story is told. The three artists in this show live and work in the region and continue this rich legacy. Their artwork tells the story of unique observation, impression, and interpretation.
Don't hesitate to contact Lani Holloway, Associate Director, Lani@kbfa.com, 860 560 3085 with inquiries or to arrange a preview of the exhibition.
